Michael Andretti
The Andretti name comes with some responsibility
including some fairly lofty expectations. Michael Andretti
is the winningest driver in CART history with 42 victories.
He has led 6,691 Indystyle laps, second only to his father,
Mario. When Michael took over as owner of Andretti Green
Racing, it was impossible to think the team could live
up to expectations.
Since joining the Indy Racing League in 2003, AGR has
compiled 32
IndyCar Series wins and four Indy Pro Series wins. The
team owns
the two highest single-season win totals in IndyCar Series
history,
claimed in 2004 and 2005 on the way to two-consecutive
IndyCar Series
championships. In 2005, the team won 11 of 16 races, including
the
Indianapolis 500® while in 2006, eight drivers drove
under the Andretti
Green Racing banner and all eight led laps during an event.
The 2007
season did not fail to enhance the Andretti legacy. Andretti
Green Racing
captured its third IndyCar Series title and second Indianapolis
500® win.
Since its inception, AGR has been a model of consistency.
Under the
ownership of Andretti and co-owners Kim Green and Kevin
Savoree, AGR
has won 32 of 80 events, an amazing 40 percent. AGR has
had at least
one driver fi nish in the top fi ve in 75 of 80 events
(95 percent).
Looking for additional business ventures, Andretti has
lengthened the
race team’s business reach since 2003. The team has
expanded its
IndyCar Series operation several times in addition to adding
a fulltime
Pro Series team in 2006. The team branched out again in
2007 by
joining forces with Acura and entering the American Le
Mans Series.
AGR captured its fi rst ALMS win at the Mobil 1 Twelve
Hours of Sebring
with Bryan Herta, Dario Franchitti and Tony Kanaan behind
the wheel.
Stepping
outside of his team owner duties, Andretti also joined
forces with Green and Savoree, this time in a combined
effort with former Team Green owner Barry Green, in July
of 2004. Together they formed Andretti Green Promotions,
which promotes the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg through
the streets of St. Petersburg, Fla. The Indy Racing League’s
first ever street course event was a mammoth success in
2004
and has continued to grow into one of the League’s
premier weekends.
After the 2007 Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, Andretti
Green
Promotions and the City of St. Petersburg announced that
the event would return for the 2008 and 2009 seasons
As
one of the most well-known racing personalities in the
United States, Andretti also makes time for charity work
through the Michael Andretti Foundation, which he founded
in May 2003.
